Aspect Map of the Broad River Watershed

LEGEND

Flat North Northeast
East Southeast South
Southwest West Northwest

An aspect map shows solar orientations of slopes. Slopes with different orientations (north, northeast, east, etc) are shaded different colors. This type of map can be useful in siting facilities when controlling exposure to the sun is important. It can also be useful to persons knowledgable about plant comunities in speculating about types and distributions of vegetation in an area.

When values are chosen carefully, an aspect map will read like a shaded relief map. North of the equator, south-facing slopes receive more direct sunlight and they are generally shaded with lighter, warmer colors. North-facing slopes receive less direct sunlight and are shaded with darker, cooler colors. Since the Broad River Watershed is comparatively flat and has no major terrain features discernable at this scale, this map looks like a mosaic. The lighter area at the north end of the watershed indicates slopes facing south, southeast, and east.
