Overview:
New understandings of the relationship between social structure and emotion have generated considerable recent excitement among sociologists of emotion. These scientists are asking questions like “how do power and status relations affect emotions?” and “how do these emotions, in turn, contribute to the development, organization, and stability of social arrangements?”. Scholars studying these questions agree on the central role that emotions play in shaping social structure, as well as the importance of social structure in shaping emotional lives. However, the mechanisms for these processes are the focus of much recent theoretical innovation and debate. Research on these issues have recently appeared on the pages of sociology’s most prestigious journals, including the American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Social Psychology Quarterly, Social Forces, and Sociological Theory. The 2006 Social Structure and Emotion Conference will bring together the diverse group of scholars responsible for these innovations for a lively intellectual exchange.
Dates:
April 6-9. The conference will begin with a Welcoming Reception on Thursday, April 6. On Friday and Saturday there will be interactive sessions with invited presentations by distinguished presenters. The conference will conclude with a morning “wrap- up” session on Sunday, April 9.Open Poster Session:
We will host an interactive Poster Session/Reception on Saturday evening of the conference. We welcome poster submissions on any topic related to the conference focus on Social Structure and Emotions. Posters provide a unique opportunity for researchers to present their work in an informal setting in which there is even more opportunity for interaction than there will be in our formal sessions. The poster session provides an ideal forum for the presentation of late breaking results and work in progress. Please note that we have a limited amount of poster slots available and so we encourage you to submit your posters abstracts as soon as possible to ensure that they receive full review. Poster boards (4x8 feet) and pins will be provided on site. Please send poster abstracts to Tiffani Everett teverett@uga.edu. The submission deadline for posters is March 1.Registration:
