Protistology presents original, substantial and critical papers in all areas of investigation of protists. Suitable topics include: morphology, taxonomy, systematics, phylogeny, ecology, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology of protozoa, algae and zoosporic fungi.
The Journal publishes Original articles, Reviews and Scientific discussions. Special Topic-oriented issues focus on some particular, often controversial problem. The section Book reviews covers newly published monographs and textbooks on relevant topics. Under the heading Historical materials we publish manuscripts devoted to major scientific schools of protistology, hallmarks in its development and people who contributed to our knowledge of protists. Chronicle presents information about past and future scientific meetings, conferences etc.
After the collapse of the USSR, the Russian Society of Protozoologists(RSP) was officially recognized a successor of the SSP. At first it contained 4 divisions covering over 300 members, now under 300. People from Azerbaijan, Byelorussia and Ukraine wanted to join the RSP as associated members, but this decision was met with many technical difficulties and failed eventually.
At the present time, the RSP has no President (see above). Vice-Presidents of the RSP are Dr. A.F. Nikitin, Dr. A.E. Khovanskikh, Dr. V.D. Kallinikova (Moscow), members of the Presidium are Dr. S.O. Skarlato, Dr. A.L. Yudin, Dr. S.I. Fokin; Secretary General is Dr. T.V. Beyer. Most active RSP division is at St. Petersburg.
Protozoologists of the Laboratory of Cytology of Unicellular Organisms of the Institute of Cytology of Russian Acadamy of Sciences (http://www.cytspb.rssi.ru/) (Head of the Laboratory Dr. S.O. Skarlato) share the common research program "Studies into the nuclear apparatus and cytoplasm of parasitic and free-living unicellular organisms", which involves several independent studies:
Many of Russian protistologists a are largely involved in elaboration of taxonomy and phylogeny of the Protists (Prof. Dr. Serguei A. Karpov, in particular).
