The publishers say that this exquisitely illustrated book is the definitive
guide to the identification of protozoa. As well as over 230 high-quality
colour photographs, it contains 500 detailed line drawings, showing
essential features and making speedy and positive identification possible.
The succinct and authoritative text is supported by extensive references.
Communities of protozoa are dealt with in a separate section, which
covers a range of environments and contains information on the significance
of these communities as indicators of contamination and pollution.
As well as being as essential teaching aid, Free-Living Freshwater protozoa
is a valuable guide for professional biologists involved with water,
sewage treatment, rivers, soils and environmental management. It is
also an important reference source for food science laboratories and
public health and regulatory bodies.

Amoeba Hop. A song by Christine Lavin, Illustrations by Betsy Franco
Feeney, with advice from the Society of Protozoologists. Anticipated
publication: autumn 2003.
Published by Puddle Jump Press for ages 6-13, Amoeba Hop is a delightful
and imaginative introduction to protozoans. See how a young girl peers
closely at a muddy puddle, and with the help of Ms. Lavin's wild imagination,
some of Mother Nature's tiniest beings come alive! Christine Lavin's
lyrics are well matched in their wit by illustrator Betsy Franco Feeney's
lush oil paintings. Together, they uncover a world teeming with life,
yet nearly hidden from the naked eye.
Accompanying Ms. Lavin's song are actual photographs of these protists,
taken by a light microscope and also an SEM by SOP's own Mark Farmer.
There is even a 'how to' section on finding and viewing the one-celled
creatures in your own back yard.
Here is what Dr. John O. Corliss, past president of the Socety of Protozoologists
has to say about "Amoeba Hop"... "'Wonderful' is even
too mild a word of praise! Young folks -- and adults alike -- will thoroughly
enjoy the combination of imaginative artwork and the fun folksong of
Christine Lavin."

The aim of this monograph is to introduce euglenoid flagellates on micrographs
to as wide an audience as possible. This work provides the first coloured
atlas of euglenophyte species from Central Europe, collected mainly in Slovakia
and Poland. These wonderful motile solitary organisms are worldwide, occurring
in diverse habitats associated with small water bodies, both fresh and marine, but
also in soils and sometimes as parasites. Dichotomous keys have been prepared
for determination of genera and infrageneric taxa. The brief terminological
dictionary will aid in understanding of the features of each genus. The 15
genera with 158 taxa are presented in 417 coloured and SEM micrographs.
The atlas will prove useful in schools, universities and those laboratories
dealing with drinking, surface or waste waters, as well as to specialists
in phycology and protozoology.
