Postoctoral position in Geobiology, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute
Biologist, American Type Culture Collection
Postdoctoral Scientist, ICoMM, Marine Biological Laboratory
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute
Postdoctoral position, Geobiology
Posting date: March 14, 2008
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratories of Joan Bernhard and Dan McCorkle - Geology and Geophysics Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution starting in spring/summer 2008. The position is part of an NSF-funded project to determine the impact of rising seawater pCO2, as a result of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide, on the health and survival of benthic foraminifera. The successful candidate will work with the PIs to refine the design of a series of time-course CO2 enrichment laboratory culture experiments, and will have principal responsibility for conducting those experiments (including determination of cell survival and of shell structure), and for subsequent data analysis and manuscript preparation. He or she also will participate in sample collection at sites in Scandinavia, New England, and Florida.
Experience:
Applicants must have a PhD in geobiology, biological oceanography, marine ecology, micropaleontology, marine geochemistry, or a related field at the time of initial employment. The ideal candidate will have experience working with live benthic foraminifera or other protists, expertise with a variety of microscopic and/or microanalytical techniques (e.g., epifluorescence, SEM, LA-ICP-MS), statistical analysis skills, a proven research and publication record, and good communication skills.
Application procedure:
Review of applications will commence immediately and continue as applications are received until the position is filled. The preferred starting date is 15 May 2008. The position is fully funded for an initial 12-14 months, with the possibility of an extension. International Census of Marine Microbes, Marine Biological Laboratory
Postdoctoral Scientist
Posting date: October 16, 2007
The Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking applicants for a full-time, year round Postdoctoral position in the Josephine Bay Paul Center in Comparative Molecular Biology and Evolution as part of the International Census of Marine Microbes (ICoMM). The goal is to develop a comprehensive list of marine taxa and to integrate this within new informatics tools that will capture information about the distribution of marine microbes from molecular databases and from publications.
Duties: The successful applicant will work as part of an international team that will compile a comprehensive understanding of the diversity and distribution of marine microbes, and to establish a framework for future communal expansion of this database. The initial task will be to develop a comprehensive list of relevant taxa. The candidate will then work with an informatics team to develop the specifications for tools that will capture data about distribution from the literature and from databases. She/he will develop a strategy for gathering distributional information and phylogenetic information and will implement the strategy.
Conditions: This position is available immediately with initial funding available for one year; continuation contingent upon performance and funding.
Education: The successful applicant will have a PhD in marine eukaryotic microbial biology. Expertise in taxonomy, molecular techniques, and familiarity with databases will be an advantage.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, statement of research interests and a list of three references including telephone numbers and email address to: Marine Biological Laboratory, Attention: Human Resources, reference code [PDS ICoMM] , 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole, MA 02543-1015, email: resume@mbl.edu.
