2007 Meeting Highlights

Wednesday, October 31, 8:00 P.M.

Open Night Session and Reception

The opening night session will feature a lecture by Roger Wilkins, who holds the Charles J. Robinson Professorship at George Mason University. A former journalist for the Washington Post, Wilkins won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Watergate scandal. He is the author of the highly acclaimed Jefferson’s Pillow: The Founding Fathers and the Dilemma of Black Patriotism (2001).

The Local Arrangements Committee invites you to a reception immediately following the lecture in Salons 1, 2, & 3. The reception is sponsored and funded by the University of Richmond in honor of its new president, SHA member Edward L. Ayers, who will welcome the Southern Historical Association to Richmond.

Historical Perspectives on Health Disparities and African Americans in Virginia

Kontos Medical Science Bldg. Auditorium, MCV Campus of VCU

Virginia Commonwealth University and the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia invite all SHA members to a special session on their Medical College of Virginia campus, a few blocks east of the hotel. (See map in program – or get directions from the Local Arrangements table.) A reception from 5:00 – 6:00 P.M will precede the program, which begins at 6:00 P.M. Those attending the reception are asked to RSVP to vphsrsvp@vcu.edu. See session CS3 for details about the program.

Presidential Address and Reception

President Nell Irvin Painter’s address "Was Marie White? Divergent Views of America by Alexis de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont" and the presentation of all awards and tributes will take place in Capital Ballrooms 4 & 5. Following her address, Princeton University, W.W. Norton & Co., Harvard University Press, and the University of North Carolina Press will host a reception in honor of President Painter in the foyer immediately outside the Capital Ballroom.

Tour of Jamestown

Cost - $40

Reservations required by Oct. 15 (use SHA registration form)

In commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Jamestown’s settlement, the SHA and its Local Arrangements Committee will feature a Saturday afternoon trip to and special tour of the site where Bill Kelso’s team of archaeologists have spent the past decade uncovering artifacts that are enriching our understanding of this first permanent English settlement in America. The tour will include the film and exhibit at the new National Park Service Visitors Center, living history interpreters and guided tours, commentary by archaeologists on site at the excavated Jamestown fort, and a visit to the stunning new Archaearium, showcasing many of the recent archaeological finds.

The trip is about an hour’s drive from Richmond. Buses will leave from the 8th Street side of the Library of Virginia (three blocks east of the Marriott). The $40 fee includes bus trip, site admission, and box lunches and beverages.

Bus Tours of Richmond

The Local Arrangements Committee, in cooperation with the Valentine Richmond History Center is offering two special-topic tours of Richmond immediately before and after the official meeting schedule. These tours offer a convenient and efficient way to see sites connected with important aspects of the city’s history.

Wednesday, October 31, 3:00 to 5:30 P.M.
African-American Heritage Tour

This tour will examine the role of free blacks and urban slaves, discuss the contributions of African Americans during the Civil War, revisit the African American experience during Reconstruction and the Jim Crow era, and recall the impact of the lives of prominent Richmonders, including Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Maggie L. Walker, Arthur Ashe and Douglas Wilder. The tour includes a trip through historic Jackson Ward, frequently referred to as the "Birthplace of Black Capitalism," and a visit to the Maggie L. Walker Historic Site. The tour will leave from the Marriott Hotel. Cost is $22 per person.

Saturday, November 3, 12:30 to 4:30 P.M.
Civil War Tour

This tour will visit some of important Civil War sites within Richmond, including a stop at the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar and one of the battlefield sites on the outskirts of Richmond operated by the National Park Service. Cost is $30 per person.
