Pickerel Frog
Rana palustris

A medium-sized frog, the pickerel frog is easily identified by its pattern of square-shaped spots, and the orange or yellow flash colors on the concealed surfaces of the hind leg. This frog also has a light line on its upper lip and prominent dorsolateral ridges. Pickerel frogs are found in almost any type of habitat ranging from mountain streams in the North to coastal plain bogs in the South. Pickerel frogs can secrete toxins from their skin glands that make them distasteful to many animals. Breeding takes place from March to May.
