Carpenter Frog
Rana virgatipes

Carpenter frogs are easily identified by four light stripes running the length of their backs and their lack of dorsolateral ridges. This pattern gives them an excellent camouflage, which helps to conceal them from predators, and unfortunately, herpetologists. These are among the most seldom encountered frogs in South Carolina and Georgia. These animals are found on the Coastal Plain in marsh or bog areas where sphagnum moss grows. The breeding call of this frog resembles the sound of a carpenter hitting a nail with a steel hammer and is usually heard from March to August.
