2009 Chicago Agency Tour

Twenty-two members of UGA’s Ad Club headed north to Chicago recently.  From October 24th to October 28th, the students and their faculty escort, advertising lecturer Dr. Jennifer Griffith, participated in the Chicago advertising agency tour, visiting six different agencies in their travels.  Explains advertising major Thomas Pulliam, “The trip was a chance to explore the Second City of advertising, visit some of the best known ad and media agencies, and view the world from 14, 500 feet up atop the Willis Tower.”

And view the world they did!  Over the weekend, the travelers had a terrific time exploring the Windy City and enjoying Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza, taking in some theater and live music, sailing Lake Michigan and the river on the architectural boat tour, and strolling and shopping the Magnificent Mile.  Monday and Tuesday, the group set out for the agencies; this year they made stops at Novus Media, Draft FCB, Rise Interactive, Starcom, Leo Burnett, and Laughlin Constable.

“My favorite part of going on agency tours, whether it is in Atlanta or Chicago, is seeing the inner workings of the agencies,” says Chelsea Gattung, a senior in the advertising major, “Every agency has a different feel, the interaction between coworkers is different, and the type of work they produce differs between larger and smaller agencies.”

Ad Club first visited Chicago in 2007, and the Chicago advertising agency tour now alternates with the New York trip, so they’ll journey back to the Big Apple in fall of 2010.  For now, though, it seems that the trip to Chicago has given some advertising students new and interesting ideas about their futures. Graduating senior and ad major Wilson Long had this to say:  "The Chicago tour revealed that there are countless opportunities existing outside of both NYC and the southeast.  If I could manage to brave the winters in the Windy City, I would love the opportunity to work for an agency in Chicago."

8-Hour Intern

A new addition to the AdClub organization is the "8-Hour Intern" program. As students, we recognize the importance of gaining exposure to different types of workplace environments and communications businesses, in addition to networking and making real contacts within the industry. We created this program to match students up with UGA AdClub alumni for a one day externship where the students shadow the alumni at their jobs  and participate in their day-to-day activities. First implemented in Spring 2009, the "8-Hour Intern" program is on the road to continue each semester and offer our members valuable experience with our wonderful alumni.

Here are a few testimonials:

"My day interning at Moxie Interactive was great! My mentors both really explained their jobs in detail, showed us projects they were working on from beginning to end, and let us ask a million questions.  I feel like I know so much more about the agency and it was truly a great day. I think that "8-Hour Intern" is a great program and would absolutely love it if you continued it in the future. Overall, everyone was really welcoming and this was a great experience. "

"The day with Hauser Group was a wonderful experience! This whole experience really helped demonstrate how an agency works and all of the steps that are taken to get one thing accomplished. I am so glad I got this opportunity- through this program I discovered a mutual friend who works at BBDO. I contacted her, just had an interview, and am going back next week for a second interview!  Hauser was wonderful and thank you AdClub for setting this up for me!"

Atlanta Agency Tour

Networking. Networking. Networking. This is the reason AdClub arranges and promotes Atlanta Agency Tours.  Each Fall and Spring semester, our Club visits some of Atlanta’s biggest ad agencies, media groups, and portfolio schools in an attempt to introduce our members to the advertising world. And, given the growing landscape of advertising, the goal of the tour is to present the various job possibilities and avenues available to our members.

The professionals we visit are, at the least, blissful to have us visit their agency only to roam around curiously and eventually pick their brains for career advice. In accordance, many of our AdClub members have landed internships through these tours simply by showing their enthusiasm and desire to work in the industry (these professionals are typically excited about what they do and become increasingly keyed up when others show the same passion).

After the tour, our members are encouraged to attend an Alumni Mixer. Students will have drinks and dinner with Grady professionals that have successfully established themselves within the advertising world in order to NETWORK. Grady alum aremore than willingly to help a fellow graduate break into the seemingly arduous industry and give you a few pointers along the way.

Remember – NETWORKING, NETWORKING, NETWORKING.

Agency Tour Trips to Chicago and New York

Every year, Ad Club members have the opportunity to go to either Chicago or New York to tour a variety of advertising agencies. If you’re even the least bit interested in having a career in the ad industry one day, one of these trips will definitely help you make up your mind! The agencies range from small and personal to large and corporate. They also present a variety of atmospheres ranging from laidback and casual to serious and professional. Along with getting a sneak peak into the Ad Industry, you have the opportunity to network with UGA Alumni currently working in the ad industry, as well as the opportunity to explore a new city and even make friends with other Ad Club members as well as other students with a major in Advertising!
