Swahili Language and Culture
1010. Elementary Swahili I
An introductory course providing students with the fundamentals of the
Swahili language and culture. Emphasis will be placed on grammar, pronounciation,
reading, writing, and conversational skills. Selected texts and audio-visual
materials expose students to Swahili culture. A minimum of one hour a week
in the language lab per week required.
1020. Elementary Swahili II
Prerequisite: SWAH 1010.
Course intended to build up cultural knowledge, structural and conversational
knowledge acquired in SWA 1010. More emphasis on register variation.
2010. Intermediate Swahili I
Prerequisite: SWAH 1020 or 1 year in East Africa.
Students are introduced to more grammar and culture. More emphasis
will be placed on the cultural embedding in the language.
2020. Intermediate Swahili II
Prerequisite: SWAH 2010 or 2 years in East Africa.
Study of more complex grammatical structures, how to benefit from cultural
notes and the reading and writing of literary works. Introduction to the
social history of the language.
3010. Advanced Swahili I
Prerequisite: SWAH 2020
This course is designed to prepare students who are about to engage
in research in East Africa or using authentic materials for their research
work. It is also a course for those who want to further their knowledge
of East Africa through geography, history, literature, and economics. The
main focus is on critical reading and the interpretation of standard and
colloquial Swahili.
3020. Advanced Swahili II
Prerequisite: SWAH 3010.
Introduction of advanced reading materials, developing student's skills
in extracting from textual materials that contribute to their field of
interest. The main focus is on reading and interpreting scientific materials,
Swahili literature and legal documents.
3390. Directed study in Swahili language and literature.
Prerequisite: SWAH 3020.
Advanced reading materials, poetry writing and reading, literary criticism
of books written by Swahili authors, discourse analysis of swahili texts.
