COURSE DESCRIPTION
YORB             1010.               Elementary YORÙBÁ  I

            This course is designed to provide a foundation in spoken and written YORÙBÁ. The development of oral/aural skills will be the principal focus. However, emphasis would be more on developing the oral skill and laying a foundation for in-depth study of the written language and its grammar. There will be numerous exercises, readings and video shows to expose the students to the YORÙBÁ language and culture. A minimum of one hour per week in the language lab is required.

 YORB             1020.               Elementary YORÙBÁ II

Prerequisite: YORB 1010.

This course continues the development of the foundation in spoken and written YORÙBÁ begun in 1010. There will be more focus on the grammar and culture. There will more reading and conversational activities than in 1010. 

 YORB             2010.               Intermediate YORÙBÁ  I

Prerequisite: YORB 1020 or an equivalent of year of YORÙBÁ language study.

This course is designed to build fluency in spoken and written YORÙBÁ.  Oral work will be geared towards promoting effective communication in day-to-day situations and functional tasks. Readings will be authentic, and of gradually increasing complexity including literary texts.  Cultural discussions will also be more detailed. 

 YORB             2020.               Intermediate YORÙBÁ  II

Prerequisite: YORB       2010 or Permission of instructor

This course is designed to continue the study of complex structures began in YORB 2010. Students will be introduced to more literary texts, including but not limited to poetry, newspapers, and magazines. 

 YORB             3010.               Advanced      I

Prerequisite: YORB  2020 or Permission of instructor

This course is designed to profit students who intend to travel to Nigeria for study or research using authentic language materials. Additional knowledge of Nigeria, YORÙBÁ speaking West Africa will also be provided through the study of the geography, political and economic structures. A large chunk of the class will be devoted to reading texts written with YORÙBÁ of day to day interaction in Nigeria.

 YORB             3020.               Advanced II

Prerequisite: YOR 3010 or Permission of instructor

This course is designed to introduce the students to more advanced reading materials, novels, thematic texts and rhetoric. This is aimed at developing the students’ ability to extract from textual materials. The interests of the students will affect the type of readings that are done. In this course, students will also be introduced to reading scientific and specialized materials.

Independent study on various special topics in YORÙBÁ Language, Literature, Culture, Mythology and Folklore.
