Welcome to the African
Studies Institute website at The University of Georgia
The African Studies Institute at the University welcomes students, faculty, friends and visitors to participate in advancing the international aspects of teaching, research, service and outreach missions of the oldest federally chartered public university in the U.S. To enrich the learning environment of its students, the primary mission of the Institute embraces:
- Enhancement of the teaching of courses with a rich African content;
- Initiation of new courses and degree programs in African Studies;
- Expansion of current and the creation of new studies abroad programs;
- Providing for and assisting student and faculty exchanges;
- Encouraging collaboration in research opportunities in and about Africa; and
- Developing continuing education and outreach programs between African institutions, other Georgia and U.S. institutions, and the University of Georgia.
Globalization is not just an economic trend. International relationships have begun to replace international divisiveness, integrating peoples and nations. While these issues presently focus on free market competition, the future lies in the international exchange of ideas as well as products. Students and faculty at UGA are and will be called upon to participate in this exchange. To do so, they must become more knowledgeable of and concerned about the African continent, its 53 countries, its 877+ million people, and its vast resources from minerals to music, and the special problems and new opportunities following the era of independence.
The African Studies Institute is here to lead and to assist on this journey to the future. The Institute provides classroom and experiential exposure and thoughtful discourse to students, undergraduates and graduates. We engage in original, collaborative research among faculty, and we encourage and support outreach/service learning opportunities for all with respect to African languages, culture, history and political economy. These experiences enable us all to better understand and participate in developing and defining internationalization in ways that promote cooperation and peace. The African Studies Institute provides benefits to students encompassing the humanities, social sciences, physical, biological and agricultural sciences, as well as those from our professional schools, such as business, education, law, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, public health and environmental design.
Come see us, email us, or simply visit our website periodically for news and vital information about Africa and programs in Africa. We hope you will take a few minutes to see what programs and opportunities our Institute has to offer you.
