Research: My research focuses on the impacts of management practices on phosphorus export in runoff from surface-application of manures to forages and grazing systems. Management practices being evaluated include various methods of mechanical aeration of the soil surface (at the small-plot and field-plot scales), fertilization practices, and the integration of cropping components into the poultry-beef cattle pasture systems that predominate in the Southern Piedmont. On-farm, field-scale data will also be used to evaluate and possibly improve the Georgia P Index, a model of agricultural P export used by farmers and agricultural professionals to conserve nutrients and help protect environmental quality.
