national
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college women, was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. Led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, nine Howard University students came together to form Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority on January 15, 1908 in Miner Hall. The students were scholars, leaders, and standouts in their community and classes.

original

The original group was comprised of Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Burke, Lillie Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Slowe, and Marie Woolfolk Taylor.

sophomores

With the exception of Ethel, the original group of women was comprised of college seniors. To continue the growth of the organization, seven members of the class of 1910 were invited to join without initiation. The sophomores were Norma Boyd, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Alice Murray, Sarah Meriweather Nutter, Joanna Berry Shields, Carrie Snowden and Harriet Terry.

The first step of establishing a national body in perpetuity was taken on January 29, 1913 when Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was legally incorporated. The incorporators included Nellie Quander, Julia Brooks, Nellie Pratt Russell and Minnie Smith.

chapter
On January 13, 1973, the call for a true representation of class, elegance, sisterhood, scholarship and service was answered by 14 ladies with a vision of salmon pink and apple green. The Eta Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha graced the campus of The University of Georgia, and for the past 35 years has upheld the legacy and honor upon which Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded over 100 years ago.

The ladies of Eta Xi have hosted several innovative and relevant programs for the University of Georgia since the chapter was chartered in 1973.The Chapter strives not only to meet AKA's national goals and targets, but also to implement creative programs from which the Athens Clarke County and the UGA community will enjoy and benefit. Some of Eta Xi's signature programs include the Annual Mr. Esquire Pageant, AKA Charm School and Easter Egg Extravaganza, the MLK March, Pink Ice Ball, MiAKA Auction, Akalades and Pink Lemonade Stand.

On December 2, 2007, after a 5 year hiatus, The Eta Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority returned to the campus of UGA.Ninety-eight beautiful women were initiated into the chapter and were henceforth known as u.n.b.r.e.AKA.b.l.e.Upon their return to campus, these women wasted no time planning events and programs to keep the legacy of Eta Xi alive. They have created new programs including, "Think Pink, Go Green," "Take A Chance," and "P.I.E: Power In Economics."It is our hope and desire that the light of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will continue to burn bright through the heart-felt actions and dutiful service displayed by the Eta Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. As we continue to grow and serve the community, we hope that you can come out and support us and our efforts as we paint the campus of the University of Georgia and the Athens community pink and green.
