Brian Watts

Ecology major Brian Wesley Watts came to UGA for its research opportunities and has not been disappointed. Through the CURO program, he co-authored a soil ecology study that will be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. He has traveled to South Korea—alone—to conduct research on a high-school organic farm, and the experience has heightened his interest in environmental education.

Teneema Kuriakose

Teneema Kuriakose

Graduate student Teneema Kuriakose came to the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine looking for first-hand experience in the fight against zoonotic diseases, which are those that transmit from animals to humans. In her time here, she helped develop a new and rapid diagnostic test for avian influenza, the dreaded “bird flu” that has made international headlines. Her next goal is to pursue a doctorate and a career in biomedical research.

Graduate student Tae Hyun Baek came to the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication for an opportunity to work with faculty in the department of advertising and public relations who make it one of the nation’s best in terms of research productivity. Jacqueline Dement came to UGA looking for a traditional college experience and she has certainly experienced the best of what the university has to offer. Jacqueline has used her energy and enthusiasm to cheer on the football team, to encourage cancer survivors, and to make a difference in the lives of young children at the Pauldoe Street Boys and Girls Club. Ethell Vereen

Ethell Vereen is an emerging leader in the environmental arena. He came to UGA to pursue a master’s in environmental health and will soon complete his doctorate in ecology. He has had the unique opportunity to become fully engaged on both the Athens and Tifton campuses. Ethell was even chosen for the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce’s Emerging Leaders Institute Class of 2010.
