UGA Study Abroad in India
Department of Journalism
Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication

Senior Briana Green decided to attend UGA after discovering UGA offered the perfect major for her -- publication management -- a combination of both journalism and business. Receiving academic merit scholarships like the Charter Scholarship helped her to be able to attend UGA as an out-of-state student. She is preparing for a career in publishing by gaining plenty of real life experience. She has been a copy editor at The Red & Black student newspaper and has completed three internships, including one at Boston Review, a political and literary magazine. Her interest in traveling and learning about other cultures led her to study abroad in India and volunteer as a World Leader for the Office of International Student Life.

Expected graduation: May 2006

Degree Objective: A.B.J. in publication management with minors in anthropology and comparative literature

University highlights, achievements and awards
Since I started at UGA in my freshman year, I have been a World Leader for the Department of International Student Life; I have participated in a Study Abroad in India, and I have been a Copy Editor at The Red & Black. I have worked as a South Tower Ambassador, a Hunker Down with Housing volunteer, and an Athens-Clarke County mentor. I have also received many honors including being named a Charter Scholar and a participant in the Honors Program. I am also in Phi Eta Sigma honor society. I have done an internship with Team Clermont, a PR firm, and an internship with Boston Review, a political and literary magazine. I also did an internship with UGA Press.

Current Employment:
I have worked in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication for all four years I have been at UGA, ever since the first day of class my freshman year. I’ve worked in many different places within the college, including the library, computer lab, and supply room. This work-study job has been a great opportunity for me to get to know the faculty and staff at Grady and also my fellow Grady students.

High School: Clinton High School

Hometown: Clinton, South Carolina

I chose to attend UGA because...
...I was definitely attracted to the friendly people and charming atmosphere of the campus and the town. Although the size of the school was intimidating at first, I am completely satisfied with my decision to come here. UGA is better than I ever expected it to be.

My favorite things to do on campus are...
...to take advantage of the large variety of classes and always take something interesting each semester in addition to my usual load of classes. For example, I’ve taken ballet, karate, speed reading, and different honors seminars. I wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to learn about such an unusual and diverse assortment of subjects. And you will always find me reading the entire Red & Black and Flagpole between classes. I also love passing by Tate plaza every day and seeing what kind of unusual events or performances are taking place.

When I have free time, I like...
...to enjoy Athens by going to local concerts and eating out at local restaurants. When I have a free night, I am usually downtown at 40 Watt or Tasty World checking out a new band. I also love all the funky, unique restaurants around here – my favorites are Clocked and Pollo Criollo.

The craziest thing I've done is...
Last summer I ate roasted crickets from a roadside stand in Pattaya, Thailand. That entire summer was a crazy adventure for me. I first traveled to India on a study abroad program, and then went on to travel in Thailand and Cambodia. I tried many new things that summer, including scuba diving, riding elephants, watching Bollywood movies, riding a motorbike, spending the night on a houseboat, and learning to speak a few phrases in Hindi and Thai.

My favorite place to study is...
...outside at the botanical gardens or near the intramural fields when the weather is nice. Being outdoors helps me focus. I find that staying away from the more popular study spots like the SLC is helpful when I'm really trying to study, because I am less likely to get distracted.

My favorite professor is...
I took a class last year about Korean women’s literature taught by comparative literature professor Hyangsoon Yi. It was one of the most interesting classes I’ve taken at UGA. Her lectures were fascinating and always kept me interested.

If I could share an afternoon with anyone, I would love to share it with...
...J.K. Rowling. It’s incredible how her series of books about Harry Potter has become popular enough to develop such a dedicated following of readers. I think that what her books have done to encourage the general public, both kids and adults, to pick up a book and read is extraordinary.

After graduation, I plan to...
...live and work abroad. I think that immersing yourself in another culture is an important and valuable experience for anyone to have. After that I’d like to go to graduate school and then work in the publishing industry. I want to publish books and magazines that inspire people and get them to look forward to reading simply for pleasure.

The one UGA experience I will always remember will be...
...the road trip I took during freshman year to see UGA play in the Sugar Bowl. Halfway through the eight hour ride to New Orleans, our car’s transmission blew up. With the car beyond repair, we had to wait over four hours at a bus stop in a small town in rural Alabama. We took a Greyhound bus the rest of the way to New Orleans and barely made it there before midnight on New Year’s Eve. Then we got to our hotel to find they had lost our reservation. The whole trip was basically a bust, but somehow we ended up having a lot of fun. At the time I barely knew the people I was traveling with, but we bonded during our disastrous encounters and are still very close friends today.
