You've reached the official webspace for the University of Georgia chapter of Amnesty International.

UGA Amnesty International meets every week on Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:00 in Room 267 of UGA's Student Learning Center. During meetings we discuss current and future projects, have a presentation on a human rights issue, and wrap up things by writing an urgent action.

Why AI?: AI not only keeps me informed about Human Rights issues around the world, but allows me to actually take action and get involved in influencing those issues.

JAMES LEE
Title: Co-Vice President
Major: Geography
Hometown: Rabun Gap, GA
Why AI?: The issue of human rights hit close to home for me because of a friend of mine who faced blatant discrimination, but not knowing anything about activism or human rights issues, I decided that joining AI might be a good way to gain some knowledge and experience. Being a part of AI has definitely been one of the best choices I have made!

TIFFANY HOLDER
Title: Co-Vice President
Major: Anthropology
Hometown: Marietta, GA
Why AI?: I have never felt as affected by anything else as Human Rights issues. Until we ALL have our needs met and have the same opportunities available, none of us can claim to have these. The world works as a whole unit, and I think it is really important to remember that and take action when there are injustices. Amnesty brings together a group of people who strive to do that, and that is why I like it.

ANUREET CHEEMA
Title: Treasurer
Major: Cellular Biology, Psychology
Hometown: Memphis, TN
Why AI? As college students, it's easy to get wrapped up in our daily lives and give little thought to life outside the borders of Athens, GA.  I've found that Amnesty is a great way for ordinary people, like myself, to become aware of humanitarian issues and campaign against human rights abuses.  I can't think of a better way to prove that you truly envision a better world than to join others of different backgrounds and nationalities who share the same determination.

MARIA DOERR
Title: General Officer
Major: Romance Languages
Hometown: Athens, Ga
Why AI? The underlying philosophy of Amnesty International is that all human beings are deserving of certain basic and indivisible rights, regardless of age, race, sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, class, nationality, religion, or political ideology. It recognizes that each individual has intrinsic worth and is deserving of fair and equal treatment and respect beyond circumstance. I would be hard-pressed to
think of something more noble and absolutely worthwhile!

JAYANTHI NARAIN
Title: General Officer
Major: International Affairs and Economics
Hometown: Macon, GA
Why AI?: Human rights are an important feature of everyday life often taken for granted.  It is important that we work to ensure all people have a certain quality of life, and AI acts as a channel so that those with the opportunity to do so can fight for the rights and freedoms of others around the world.

GRACE HUNT
Title: General Officer
Major: History, with English minor
Hometown: Cordele, Georgia
Why AI?: Growing up in a small, rural community in South Georgia, I witnissed what inequality, poverty, and lack of opportunity could do to people. I feel that if we do not take a stand against injustice now, however feeble that stand may be, our future will be just as bleak as our present. Amnesty International is an organization that is fighting everyday to protect human rights for all people, and I am proud to be a part of that fight.

ERIN ANDERSON
Title: General Officer
Major: Comparative Literature
Hometown: LaGrange, GA
Why AI?: I have witnessed the effectiveness of this organization in combating human rights abuses both locally and internationally.  With so much devastation in our world, its imperative that we all do our part to perpetuate fairness and equality.  Amnesty is just the right organization for this."

SAMIR ABDULLAHI
Title: Web Developer
Major: International Affairs
Hometown: Atlanta, GA
Why AI?: I come from a very culturally diverse background which has caused me to be very concerned with global affairs. Human Rights plays an important role in my life in that my father was a political dissident from Ethiopia. It is my appreciation of my father's struggles and my concern for my fellow man which is why I have decided to help out Amnesty International.
