Welcome to Anthropology Society’s website! Anthropology Society is the University of Georgia’s undergraduate anthropology club. We have events throughout the fall and spring semesters and are here to serve UGA students who are anthropology majors and minors, who are interested in anthropology, or who just want to know what anthropology is about! Anthropology is about us—humans. In short, Anthropology Society is here as a place for UGA students to discover humanity.

“Breathing, Diving and Singing: Research in Austronesian Folklore.” Dr. Dezso Benedick from the UGA Department of Comparative Literature is visiting to speak of his work. Dr. Benedek is also the Director of Asian Languages here at UGA and has many tales to tell about his work and travel in China and Romania, as well as many other places around the world. He is also the co-author of a very interesting book, Ghosts, Vampires, and Werewolves: Eerie Tales from Transylvania.

UGA Anthropology Professor Dr. Pete Brosius is going to visit to speak about the Studies Abroad in the South Pacific Maymester Fiji Program. He has established this anthropological visit to Fiji where you can earn six credit hours while sitting on the beach and visiting Fijian villages.
Next, we will watch the movie ‘Baraka’—a “nonverbal film containing images of 24 countries from 6 continents. The film has no plot, contains no actors and has no script. “Doing Archaeology in Oaxaca, Mexico” - UGA Anthropology Professor Dr. Steve Kowalewski is coming to share his interests and research with us. He is currently working on an archaeological site in Mexico. Dr. Kowalewski teaches courses in the department such as The Aztecs and Maya, New World Archaeology and Archaeology of the Southwest.

Mark Warren is the author of Magic from the Woods and The American Wilderness Awards. He teaches outdoor classes called “Medicine Bow.” This refers to a primitive school of Earthlore in the North Georgia Mountains that specializes in Native American survival skills (primitive skills) and nature classes. He is going to visit and do an ethnobotany workshop with our organization!

Anthropology Professor from Mercer University, Dr. Craig Byron, is going to speak on “Primates in Vietnam: Locomotor Adaptations of Langurs in Southeast Asia.” This talk will review the primate diversity of SE Asia with specific emphasis on the langurs of Vietnam. Data pertaining to the anatomical use of forelimb suspensory postures and behaviors (i.e., brachiation) by douc langurs (Pygathrix nemaeus) will be shown. In summary, these data will be discussed in reference to the general lack of brachiating Old World Monkeys. The Douc Langur may inform our understanding of the origins for ape-like locomotor behaviors in an Old World Monkey/Ape Catarrhine common ancestor.

Southern Seed Legacy—Annual Seed Swap
We would like to meet behind Baldwin Hall around 2:00 PM and then carpool to Agrarian Connections Farm for their Annual Old Timey Seed Swap. In addition to swapping some favorite heirloom seeds, enjoy eating barbecue and listening to bluegrass music in the nice spring weather. Anyone is invited and welcome to come. It lasts from 3-8 PM.
