Volunteering at MECA


Do you want to get involved with the University of Georgia’s Marine Extension Service program? Come join our volunteer program! Whether you enjoy being outside “in the field” or teaching hands-on interactive programs, you will find exciting ways to get involved.

Volunteer Benefits:

• free admission to the Aquarium • 20% discount in our educational sales shop
• training sessions • social events and quarterly get-togethers
• meet new friends and colleagues • quarterly volunteer newsletter
• accompany student groups on boating excursions

Volunteer Opportunities:.

Saturday General Visitor Program Greet visitors to the Aquarium and answer questions regarding exhibits
Assist with the Educational Sales Shop

Elementary Education Programs (Pre-K through 4th grade)

Lead Aquarium tours
Conduct touch-tank sessions with live animals
Assist with hands-on, interactive activities
Elementary Outreach Programs (Pre-K through 4th grade) Travel to nearby schools with UGA MECA staff
Assist with hands-on, interactive programs to students
Southeast Phytoplankton Monitoring Network (SEPMN) Assist with a coastal Georgia research project
Monitor phytoplankton species in the Skidaway River at UGA MECA
Invertebrate Touch Tanks Feed touch tank invertebrates on scheduled days
Maintain and clean touch tanks on scheduled days
Special Events (Annual Open House, Festivals) Assist with the implementation of daily activities during special events

To become a volunteer you:

• must be at least 18 years old
• must complete and submit an *application
• must want to learn, share your expertise with others and most importantly, have fun!

*applications can be mailed or faxed to you upon request by calling the Volunteer Coordinator at (912) 598-2350. Volunteer applications are also available in the lobby of the Aquarium.
