“If UGA is to join the leadership
ranks of the nation's best public institutions, she will require
leadership levels of support that all first-rate universities
enjoy.”
THE RISE IN EXCELLENCE
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA over the past decade is
exciting, even astounding, for those who have loved UGA for
years. UGA has practically jumped onto the national scene, its
climb to prominence now annually receiving recognition. But
that rapid ascent onto the list of America’s best public
universities, as exciting as it has been, is only the beginning.
The potential for UGA to enter the very top ranks of public
research universities in America is more apparent each year.
As outlined in our strategic plan, this is an institution with
lofty goals. We are on the right path. We are dreaming big and
aiming high, and these are not idle dreams. The University of
Georgia is dedicated to meeting the challenges of the 21st century
and capitalizing on its opportunities. Our first campaign of
the new century is critical to our success.
I am pleased to introduce you to that campaign, Archway to Excellence.
This statement outlines for you a few of the many ways the University
of Georgia is excelling and where our greatest needs lie. We
must meet these needs in order to gain new heights. This statement
will show you some of the varied ways the missions of teaching,
research and service are changing lives and enhancing the quality
of life throughout Georgia and the world. It will outline for
you ways the University can become truly great — with
the resources, the faculty and students that will place her
at the very top.
The University of Georgia must have your financial support and
that of many others to reach that goal. Private funding is critical
to the success of each institution considered among the nation’s
best. If UGA is to join the leadership ranks of the nation’s
best public institutions, she will require leadership levels
of support that all first-rate universities enjoy.
Those of us who love this institution and believe in its mission
and great potential must step forward in ways we have not contemplated
before. We cannot be satisfied with the UGA of today, just as
those on whose shoulders we stand were not satisfied. They have
built us a fine university which we can make great. A decade
from now, with your help, the University of Georgia truly will
be considered among the nation’s very best.
Michael
F. Adams, President
