| The Graduate School was formally established
in 1910, and thus began its vital role in the efforts of UGA
to carry out the mission of teaching, research, and service.
It is through this enduring commitment to higher educational
aspirations that the Graduate School continues today to launch
professional careers, broaden horizons, and cultivate intelligent
leaders of tomorrow. As the Graduate School nears its centennial
celebration and prepares for its next 100 years, we must build
on the tradition of a well-educated citizenry. As citizen-scholars,
our graduates contribute to the economic and social vitality
of the State of Georgia and of the world beyond its boundaries.
Nothing is more important to the development of the University
of Georgia as a world-class research university than growth
in the quality and number of graduate students. The Graduate
School provides an environment for graduate education that
promotes excellence and will enable our future generations
of scholars to lead in a world of constant change. Graduate
students inspire and mentor undergraduates. They invigorate
faculty. They challenge administrators to grow with them in
their discoveries and creations. More than ever before, our
society needs problem solvers — scientists, entrepreneurs,
and philosophers. Our society needs creators of humane and
just environments — teachers, social workers, and policy-makers.
And our society needs visionaries — artists, musicians,
and writers. At the Graduate School, all are valued, and all
experience rigorous, intellectual programs that enable them
to be well-prepared leaders in this ever-changing society.
It is the commitment to excellence that drives the faculty
and students at the Graduate School. But it is the promise
of stewardship, from both alumni and friends alike, that enables
this journey. Private giving starts with you, and I urge you
to be as generous as possible. Your support directly assists
graduate students, who, in turn, contribute to a legacy of
greatness at the University of Georgia.
Thank you!
