EXPERIENCE INDIA : North and South

May 13-June 17, 2007

Depart Atlanta for India May 13, 2007

Beginning May 13, 2007 depart Atlanta for India to explore the many riches that India has to offer. Among your explorations experience the magnificent capital city of Delhi on the plains of North India , including the Red Fort, the National Museum of Art, the astrological observatory, Mahatma Gandhi's memorial, the crafts museum and the tallest freestanding tower in the world. Travel overland to Agra , home of the Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of the world. Visit the Agra Fort, the abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri , and the final resting place of Emperor Akbar.

Journey to Mumbai ( Bombay ), jewel of the Arabian Sea coast, center of modern trade, finance, and the booming high-tech industry. See the magnificent ancient sculpture of the caves on Elephanta Island and explore the Prince of Wales Museum, Bombay University , and Malabar Hill's Hanging Gardens . Shop Crawford Market, the Thieves Bazaar, and the unique boutiques and street stalls along Colaba Causeway. Meet movie stars on location in Bollywood, the world's largest film industry. Spend time at Pune University where special lectures and cultural programs have been arranged with distinguished professors and artists.

Travel south to Chennai ( Madras ) where the Bay of Bengal laps white sand beaches and ancient monuments weather gently in the summer sun. Stroll along exotic markets and see the thriving south Indian movie industry, as well as music and dance centuries old.

Spend time in Kerala State , South India that boasts of its bustling seaport city of Kochi . There you explore Mattancherry Palace , residence of the Maharaja of Travancore, the unique Jewish Synagogue, the Church of St. Francis , as well as the fabled Chinese fishing nets. Witness dances, dance-dramas and music concerts at Kerala's center for the performing arts. Take an enchanting backwaters boat ride through rural Kerala's thick coconut palm forests, rice paddy fields, and water markets. Stroll along the white sand beaches of Kovalam. Have a restful Ayurvedic massage and a refreshing sip of coconut water along the way.

PROGRAM FEES: $3,800 for approximately 5 weeks.

The program fees for five weeks in India are approximately $3,800* and include the following (based on a minimum enrollment of 10 participants):

  • Accommodations in multi-bedded residences, such as hotels, hostels, and pensions; International economy air fare to and from Atlanta and India ;
  • Internal air travel and ground transportation in India ;
  • Most meals at restaurants, hostels, etc. when dining as a group;
  • Educational excursions within most cities and between cities and nearby sites of cultural and historical importance, such as to and from Agra and the Taj Mahal, to and from Elephanta island near Mumbai, throughout Chennai and Kerala, including backwaters tours and other points of interest;
  • Most ground transportation within cities which is group related;
  • Entrance fees to most museums and cultural sites that the group visits;
  • Admission to cultural events, such as dance and music performances, plays, etc. which the group attends;
  • Access to the program directors throughout the tour;
  • Seminars and lectures by guest faculty and artists;
  • After-show talks with artists where available;
  • Services of tour guides when deemed appropriate by the program directors;
  • Medical insurance costs.

Program fees do not include the following:

  • Mandatory additional U.S. and Indian government and airline-imposed departure taxes and fees;
  • U.S. Passport costs and Indian government visa fees;
  • Damage deposits that may be imposed at living accommodations;
  • Text books;
  • Additional field trips or excursions that may be required by your instructors or that individual students may elect to take;
  • Personal expenses such as laundry and tips;
  • Personal effects coverage or medical insurance upgrade costs;
  • Special accommodations sought by students but not provided for the group;
  • Meals not provided to the group;
  • Tuition fees to your university;
  • Overweight luggage charges to and from India or within India ;
  • Telephone, fax, and e-mail charges which are not group related;

*Fees may vary prior to departure owing to a wide range of unforeseen reasons.


COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Students are required to register for a minimum of 9 credits of course work in order to participate in this program. Choose course options from among the following: 1. History, Culture and Diversity of India, 2. Indian Literature, 3. Indian Drama and Theatre, and 4. Indian Cinema. 5. Introduction to Political Science.  PLEASE NOTE: None of the courses require prerequisites. Courses in Hindi may be substituted for some of the required courses. In special cases, a student may petition to add the language credit to the 9 academic credits required.

Credits are available at the undergraduate and graduate student level.

Courses are supervised and taught by USG faculty. Guest lectures may be provided by faculty from universities and institutions in India .


ACCOMMODATIONS AND MEALS:

Students reside in hotel, guesthouse, and dorm accommodations throughout the trip, ordinarily two persons per room. Meals range from western style to Indian style.

APPLICATION DEADLINES:

January 12, 2007: Application form and non-refundable application fee of $50 due.

February 12, 2007: First installment of application fees of $1000 to be used to reserve international air ticket.

March 12, 2007: Second installment of $1,000 fees to be used to insure
accommodations and internal ground transportation in India .

April 5, 2007: Balance of program fees due.

Mid-April 2007: Registration for summer semester and payment of tuition fees.

FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS:

Some applicants selected for this program may receive $500 stipends toward the cost of the program for work related to the program prior to departure. Expression of interest should be addressed to Dr. Farley Richmond, University of Georgia .

REMEMBER: Hope scholarships cover tuition costs for Georgia resident students enrolled in any University System of Georgia institution. Out-of-state students pay a modest fee to the University of Georgia and are entitled to register as an instate student and pay instate tuition charges. Instate tuition fees for 9 credits of course work are currently slightly more than $1,200 at UGA and less than $900 for Georgia Perimeter College students. Graduate students pay special fee rates depending on university status.

SPECIAL FINANCIAL AID INCENTIVE:

At least one fully admitted applicant will receive $1,000 as a scholarship for work performed for the directors of the India program while overseas. Details concerning application for this support will be available after students have been admitted to the program and paid the full cost of their program fees. NOTE: The stipend will be provided after the winner arrives in India and may be used to cover the cost of the program.
