Alpha Sigma Rho serves many purposes for its members and the community. For us, the sorority is a second home - a place for love and support. We form life-lasting friendships with each other. The University of Georgia is a big school, but the sorority allows us to form a small, close-knit family. We hosts many events for its members (LOTS of food is involved...) as well as events with other organizations. There are always plenty of laughs and memories! Alpha Sigma Rho also tries to help out the community. Many of our members volunteer on their own at various places like Oasis Catolico and Mercy Clinic. In addition to our own individual efforts to help the community, Alpha Sigma Rho participates in various events and activities during the year. We participate in the annual Relay for Life at UGA, which benefits the American Cancer Society. It is an all night celebration in remembrance of those who have been affected by cancer. In 2009, Alpha Sigma Rho raised $720 for the cause. We also participate in the AIDS walk of Atlanta, which raises awareness for HIV/AIDS. Each month, Alpha Sigma Rho helps at the Food Bank of Athens and helps clean Riverbend Rd., which is our Adopt-A-Highway street. And each Christmas season, the sisters get together to fill and wrap boxes for Operation Christmas Child, which helps bring Christmas to children around the world. Each year, we host Cultural Fusion, a performance show that showcases campus-wide talent to benefit China Care, our national philanthropy organization. China Care helps provide basic needs and medical support for Chinese orphans. Since our adoption of China Care as our philanthropy organization, our chapter has been able to fund three cleft-palate surgeries and send plenty of other supplies. |
