08-13-07 - ASU Welcomes You!
We, the African Student Union at the University of Georgia are a group of students and faculty who simply love Africa. We meet every other Sunday to educate each other about Africa, discuss current African affairs, and create long lasting bonds with others who share our common interest in Africa.

We have a variety of programs and activities that we sponsor through out the academic year aimed at dispelling myths and false notions about Africa. We participate in panel discussions, cultural presentations and other activities that address misconceptions about Africa.
As an organization committed to the African tradition of “being each others keeper,” we also host a number of socials during the year. These events create environments where our members are able to bond with each other and form extended families while in Athens. Some of our socials include Parties, Movie Nights and Road trips. We also make it a point to support and encourage our members that participate in other extracurricular activities on the UGA campus.
In order to serve our community both here in Athens as well as in Africa, the African Student Union continuously takes part in a number of community service projects while also displaying African culture. We do so through events like Tales by Moonlight, an event that brings Africa to Athens for children in the local area, and our annual International Ball that raises money for international charities and food for local food shelters. We also raise money for the annual Relay 4 Life that takes place every spring semester.
AFRICA NIGHT -- Each Spring semester, the African Union sponsors a night to display African culture. The show includes performance from the members ranging from dancing to acting and everything in between. This show has sold out each year and has won the award for “Best Cultural Night” as well as “Outstanding Cultural Awareness Program.”
