Listserv Basics for Listowners and Subscribers
Listserv commands via email, such as subscription management requests, are sent to the *server* address, listserv@listserv.uga.edu

Posting to the list: To send mail to the list (ie, to all list subscribers), send the message to the *list* address, AMS-L@listserv.uga.edu. See the settings above for who is authorized to post to this list.

 Basic Listserv Commands for Subscribers
This is the email you will receive once you are added to the list. It contains valuable commands.

You have been added to the AMS-L mailing list (AMS listserv) by Greg Wassel <gwassel@uga.edu>

Please save this message for future reference, especially if this is the first time you are subscribing to an electronic mailing list. If you ever need to leave the list, you will find the necessary instructions below. Perhaps more importantly, saving a copy of this message (and of all future subscription notices from other mailing lists) in a special mail folder will give you instant access to the list of mailing lists that you are subscribed to. This may prove very useful the next time you go on vacation and need to leave the lists temporarily so as not to fill up your mailbox while you are away! You should also save the "welcome messages" from the list owners that you will occasionally receive after subscribing to a new list.

To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to AMS-L@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU. This is called "sending mail to the list," because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address (AMS-L@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU) is also called the "list address." You must never send a command to that address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must be sent to the "LISTSERV *server* address," LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU

You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF AMS-L" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU

Following instructions from the list owner, your subscription options have been set to "REPRO" rather than the usual LISTSERV defaults. For more information about subscription options, send a "QUERY AMS-L" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU

Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. You can get a list of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX AMS-L" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU. You can then order these files with a "GET AMS-L LOGxxxx" command, or using LISTSERV's database search facilities. Send an "INFO DATABASE" command for more information on the latter.

This list is available in digest form. If you wish to receive the digested version of the postings, just issue a SET AMS-L DIGEST command.

This list is confidential, in the sense that is is un-published on local or worldwide lists of lists. Please note that the "GIVE" command is automatically disabled for all archive files.

Please note that it is presently possible for other people to determine that you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW" command, which returns the e-mail address and name of all the subscribers. If you do not want your name to be visible, just issue a "SET AMS-L CONCEAL" command.

More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU.

 Basic Listserv Commands for Listowners
Check out managing your list on the web at www.listserv.uga.edu. You will need to get a listserv password (good for any lists you manage or are subscribed to on UGA's server). Then go to the Manage page, where you can perform all the functions described below very quickly and easily.

List owners are not automatically subscribed to their list. They must subscribe (or be added) in order to receive list postings.

To add someone to the list, send the Listserv command: add listname userid@node <full name> for example: add AMS-L tilde@arches.uga.edu Arethusa M. Tilde.

To delete someone from the list, send the Listserv command: delete listname userid@node for example: delete AMS-L tilde@arches.uga.edu

To review your list headers and subscribers, send the Listserv command: review AMS-L.

Listserv command notes: -- You may include multiple commands in a mail message. -- the QUIET option (ie, QUIET ADD or QUIET DELETE) supresses notification messages to the user you're adding or deleting. -- if you append a signature block to your e-mail, Listserv will attempt to find valid commands there, and complain when it doesn't. To avoid this, -- turn off signature block, or -- follow your last command with a line containing only two dashes: this is a signal to Listserv not to process any remaining text.

Notes on errors: If mail to a subscriber becomes undeliverable (which can happen for many reasons, and be a temporary or permanent problem), Listserv will, by default, 'auto-delete' subscribers for which the errors conform to standard formats, and which seem to be permanent. You will receive a summary report of these actions. Subscriber error messages that Listserv can't decipher will be sent individually to the primary listowner, who will have to delete the subscriber.
