Tim Davies graduated from Queen Mary & Westfield College, University of London with a B.Sc. (Honors) in Microbiology in 1990. Following graduate research assistant positions in animal pathology at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, and in microbial physiology at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), he entered graduate school. Study of the microbial physiology and fermentation optimization of anaerobic bacteria under Dr. Gill Stephens in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UMIST led to a Ph.D. in 1995.

In 1996, Tim joined Lars Ljungdahl's lab at the University of Georgia where post-doctoral study focussed initially on the purification of extremely oxygen-labile proteins from anaerobic acetogens. The formation of a biotechnology company, Aureozyme, to commercialize technology developed under Prof. Ljungdahl encouraged Tim to return to fermentation process development, optimizing production conditions for protein production in native and recombinant bacterial, yeast and mycelial fungal hosts, and also developing downstream processing protocols. During this time he was able to visit and work with a number of contract fermentation facilities.

In August 2001, Tim became the director of the Fermentation Research Facility, succeeding Dr. Ronald Makula, a thirty-year veteran of the position, and of BioXpress, taking over from Dr. Marly Eidsness, overseeing the integration of the two units to form the Bioexpression and Fermentation Facility.
