Bioexpression and Fermentation Facility

Purpose of Lab

View of Lab 678 showing the Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC) system for protein purification. Proteins may be separated by anion and cation exchange, hydrophobic interaction, gel filtration, reverse phase, and affinity media in columns of various capacities.

The purpose of the BioXpress Laboratory is to provide custom services in molecular biology and protein expression and purification to academic researchers and biotechnical industry in Georgia. Funding for BioXpress instrumentation comes from the Georgia Research Alliance who envisions that the BioXpress Laboratory will provide economical, accessible services and training, thereby promoting biotechnical research and commerce in the state of Georgia. The objectives of the BioXpress Laboratory include easy access to state of the art equipment, allowing researchers to carry out experiments without purchasing equipment or investing significant time. The BioXpress Laboratory specializes in cloning and protein purification techniques, freeing the researcher or entrepreneur to pursue questions specific to their research interests, such as structure, function, and regulation of gene products, biophysical characterization of protein products by spectroscopic techniques, or pilot scale protein production. The utility of the BioXpress Laboratory is in its application of biotechnology tools tailored to your exact research needs.

Academic researchers will benefit from the instrumentation and flexible structure of services available in the BioXpress Laboratory. Researchers may opt (1) to do their own research, or (2) have the BioXpress staff provide all services. Professors, postdoctoral, graduate students, undergraduates, and technical research personnel may use instrumentation and pursue projects independently or they may receive lab bench training in molecular biology and protein purification techniques from the BioXpress staff. Equipment may be used as needed (e.g. to supplement research equipment in one's home lab) or entire projects may be carried out, such as cloning or protein expression. Thus, students may do varying amounts of their laboratory research in the BioXpress Laboratory and faculty may elect to carry out sabbatical research in the BioXpress Laboratory.

The private sector of biotechnology research will find that the BioXpress Laboratory can meet their molecular biology and protein expression and purification needs. We can develop your protein purification protocols, saving you the most time-consuming step associated with protein purification. We can also help you decide on methods of characterization of your protein products. Our services are provided in strict confidence.
