Black Tie Party Wins 1200 Votes, Senate Seat

February 10 -- The results from the SGA elections were released today, and the students of the College of Education have elected the Black Tie Party's first Senator.

Freshman Meredith Cheetham won election as one of four SGA Senators from the College.

Overall, Black Tie Party candidates finished with more than 1,200 votes in three colleges. The SPIA ticket of Bryan Pruiett and Jamarl Glenn finished third and fourth, finishing well ahead of the Vote Naked Party's candidates -- despite Vote Naked's size and prominence on campus.

The Black Tie Party congratulates Meredith, and we look forward to working with the new administration to ensure that the University of Georgia continues to excel.

And don't expect this to be the end of the line for the Black Tie Party! We intend to continue as a registered student organization, and we remain committed to making a positive impact on this campus and community.

Stay tuned to this website over the coming days and weeks for more information on how the Black Tie Party will change and improve, and how you can become involved as we continue to advocate for the students of UGA.

SPIA Candidates Debate

February 3 -- Six candidates from three parties presented their visions for SPIA, SGA and the University at a debate held Thursday night in the SLC. SPIA Senate candidates Bryan Pruiett and Jamarl Glenn (pictured at right) represented the Black Tie Party.

All six candidates agreed on most major issues, such as implementing some kind of enrollment cap/admissions standard for SPIA, better access to major classes, and improving the reputation and performance of SGA.

The Black Tie candidates outlined their visions for the future, and their analysis of current issues. Jamarl Glenn modified a quotation from President Ronald Reagan, stating, "SGA is not the solution to the problem. SGA is the problem." He explained that he was "tired of hearing 'put the student first'" without any real follow-up actions. Action, he feels, is the only way to truly serve the students, a position the Black Tie Party hopes to put in force in the new administration.

Bryan Pruiett stressed the need to make sure SPIA students received the classes they needed to take in order to complete their degrees. He cited SPIA's high national rankings as signs of success, and said that the school should continue to strive to improve its status and reputation.

Debates Slated for This Week

UPDATE: February 2 -- Tonight's Presidential/Vice-Presidential debate featured many allegations and broad ideas, but few solid plans for the next SGA administration. The Classic and Vote Naked parties' candidates discussed such issues as the 316 toll, OASIS hours, SGA's mission and goals, and even campaign websites.

Both sides claimed credit for extended OASIS hours, as both Presidential candidates have headed the Academic Affairs Committee. Left unmentioned: the fact that OASIS is still non-operational for 8 of the 24 hours each day, even during drop-add.

The Black Tie Party remains committed to extending OASIS hours to as many as possible by putting pressure on the appropriate departments to serve the students when it's most convenient to us.

Both parties were also asked about their respective websites, neither of which had a published platform as of 9 PM last night. While both have made improvements since, the Black Tie Party remains the only party to have had a fully functioning website since Day 1 of the campaign.

We believe that the best way for students to get involved and vote is by hearing positions directly from the candidates and parties. Check this site often for the most up-to-date information on the Black Tie Party.

And don't forget -- SPIA Senate Debate is Feb. 3 in the SLC. Details are below. Come out and support a new kind of SGA.
You're Invited.

February 2 -- As campaign season hits its midpoint, two candidate debates are on tap this week to help students make their decisions about SGA elections.

Tomorrow night, Feb. 3, candidates for Senate from the School of Public and International Affairs will debate at 7pm in Room 148 of the SLC. Six candidates from all three parties, including Black Tie's Bryan Pruiett and Jamarl Glenn, will discuss how they plan to represent UGA's newest school.

Also, tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 2), the Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates will debate in the Tate Reception Hall. While the Black Tie Party does not have a candidate in this race, we encourage all students to attend and get involved in choosing the future of SGA. Black Tie candidates and party members will be on hand for questions afterwards.

We urge everyone who can make it to come out to these events and show that the student body does care who represents us in SGA. Follow this website for information about future events.
