Adult Programs
The Garden offers a diverse range of programming for adults including professional certification programs, one-day symposia, workshops, and rambles, as well as hands-on gardening or arts programs. Topics include horticulture, botany, ecology, hands-on gardening, plant conservation, flower arranging, cooking and much more. Below are highlights from our adult programs.
Certificate in Native Plants
The Certificate in Native Plants offers committed individuals a comprehensive series of short courses in identification, cultivation, propagation, ecology and conservation of native Georgia plants. With an emphasis on participatory learning, this 80-hour program provides a supportive and challenging learning atmosphere. Participants will gain a greater appreciation and understanding of native plants in a broad context.
Master Gardener Program
The Georgia Master Gardener Program provides intensive training in gardening. This ten-week, 20-session course includes topics ranging from healthy soils to pest management. Sessions are taught by experts in their respective fields. The Garden co-sponsors this program with the Clarke County Cooperative Extension Service each winter from January through March.
Garden Symposia
Each year the Garden offers several full-day symposia. Our two major symposia include the Perennial Symposium held in mid-October and the Native Plant Symposium in late January. The Native Plant Symposium is co-sponsored with the Garden Club of Georgia.
Series Programs
Two ongoing program series include Beekeeping for Beginners and Flower Arranging. Beekeeping for Beginners is a six-session program covering beekeeping history, care, feeding, hive assembly, hive management, installation, hive buildup, and harvesting honey. The beekeeping series begins in December and meets once a month through May. Flower Arranging is a five-session series covering the basics of design, mass and foliage design, creative and miniature design, fruit and vegetable design, and table design. This program is co-sponsored with the Garden Club of Georgia.
After Hours at the Garden
Part educational, part social, After Hours at the Garden events are an exciting partnership between the FRIENDS of the Garden and the Garden's Education Department. Growing, learning, and enjoying lifethat's what FRIENDS are for. And there is no better place to "grow" your friendships than the Garden. After Hours classes include soapmaking, cooking, garden art, holiday wreath making and more.
Garden Rambles
Garden Rambles are informal walks through the Gardens and along the trails that focus on items of seasonal interest. Rambles are usually led by Garden staff or University professors knowledgeable in the particular subject area. All walks are free and open to the public. Some rambles may be strenuous as well as tiring for young children.
Special Events
There are also a variety of other types of adult programming such as concerts and wine tastings which can be found on our Special Events page. |
