Bulgaria:
Study Abroad / Service Learning
May Session: May 12 - June 5, 2009
The Program:
The Bulgaria Study Abroad & Service Learning Experience provides students the opportunity to learn several approaches used to manage, conserve, and interpret natural and cultural resources for multiple purposes, including tourism. Students earn 6 semester credit hours from courses in which learning occurs during lectures, field trips, discussion sessions, implementation of a service project, and writing a summary report of the project and presenting it to our Bulgarian hosts and instructors.
Can Bulgaria’s well-preserved natural and cultural resources attract international tourists to rural areas and foster economic growth? Is such use wise and sustainable? We will focus on problem-solving – identifying problems associated with advancing sustainable nature- and culture-based tourism, providing suggested actions to take, as well as identifying unique opportunities and attractions within Bulgaria.
This is a multidisciplinary course drawing on expertise from wildlife ecology, historic and cultural preservation, and natural resources recreation and tourism. It is open to all undergraduate and graduate students with good academic standing.
Application deadline: February 16, 2009
(a non-refundable deposit of $500 is due at the time application is submitted)
