Stable Isotope Applications
Stable isotope programs at the CAIS are directed primarily toward the following:
Natural Product Authenticity Testing: Using isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) to differentiate natural and synthetic flavors, ingredients, and manufacturing methods for the detection of adulteration in food and beverage products.
Isotopic Characterization of Compounds: Using gas chromatography/combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS) to isotopically characterize constituents of complex organic compounds, including food and flavoring compounds and geochemical species in the environment.
Stable Isotope Hydrologic Tracers: Using gas chromatography (GC) to measure stable krypton gas in water, permitting its routine use as a non-radioactive tracer for gas transport measurement and stream reaeration modeling.
