UGA Homecoming Week 2008 student celebration includes 5K race, block party, T-Pain concert, much more

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia’s Homecoming Committee has announced six days of spirited events to be held during “Homecoming Week 2008: A Lasting Legacy,” October 12-18, 2008. From a walk/run to a performance by a popular hip hop artist, events will cater to every taste among UGA’s student body, as well as faculty, staff, and the local community.

The celebration begins on Sunday, October 12 with the Dawg Dash Fun Run, a 5K walk/run. The event gets underway at 7 a.m. at Stegeman Coliseum, and each participant will receive a Homecoming 2008 t-shirt. Registration is $15 for UGA students, $20 for non-students, and is available in advance or at the race. Forms are available online at www.uga.edu/homecoming.

At midnight on October 12, the annual student organization Street Painting Competition will take place on Sanford Drive in front of the Tate Student Center. Judging will be held on Monday morning, with points awarded to winners and runners-up in Greek and non-Greek categories.

Monday, October 13 is the official Homecoming kickoff event, Tate Plaza Extravaganza, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Tate Plaza. The kickoff will feature displays, free food, and giveaways. Students will also be able to cast their votes for Homecoming king and queen.

A Block Party is scheduled on Tuesday, October 14 from 4-6 p.m. on Legion Field. The party will feature free food from local restaurants in an event modeled on the annual “Taste of Athens” culinary festival. Members of the Homecoming court will be present to meet students.

Nationally known hip hop artist T-Pain will perform on Wednesday, October 15 at 8 p.m. on Legion Field. T-Pain is known for the Billboard magazine hit singles “I’m Sprung,” “Buy U a Drank,” and “I’m ‘N Luv (With a Stripper).” Admission to the concert is free for students with valid UGACards. Tickets for nonstudents are $20 in advance and $30 the day of the show. They are available at the Tate Student Center Cashier’s Window from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A Pre-tailgate Party will be held on the Tate Student Center Lawn from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Thursday, October 16. Free food and spirit activities will get students fired up for the Homecoming Game.
The highly anticipated Homecoming Parade through downtown Athens is scheduled on Friday, October 17 at 5:30 p.m. Former Bulldog coach and athletic director Vince Dooley will serve as grand marshal.

Later that evening, students will flock to Legion Field for the final Homecoming Week 2008 student event – Dawgs After Dark: Carnival. The program will be held from 6-11 p.m. and will include carnival games, midway rides, and free food. Dawgs After Dark is free for students with valid UGACards and $5 for non-students.

The Homecoming king and queen will be crowned during half-time at the Georgia v. Vanderbilt game on Saturday, October 18.
