Barn Cats
Promoting the Adoption of Excellent Mousers
Barn Cats!
Barn cats may not always be the friendliest cats that we adopt out, but some have been known to tame with time. Even if they don't voluntarily jump into your lap, you can rest assured that your horse feed will be vermin-free!
How to Adopt a Barn Cat
In order to ensure that your newly adopted barn cat remains your barn cat, there are a few preparations we'll have to go through before the adoption proceeds.
- Allow Us to Tour Your Facilities. We'd like to take a look at your place to ensure that you and your new barn cat will be able to live together harmoniously. We'll be looking for 1) an appropriate form of shelter and 2) a place where Barn Cat can reliably eat and drink. If your barn isn't quite up to par, we'll offer a few suggestions and come back in a week or two. We want you to take our barn cats, but we also want to make sure they'll be happy in their new home.
- Secure a Cat Hideout. When your barn cat first arrives on your property, he'll need a place to stay for at least 4-6 weeks while he gets acclimated to his new home. This can be a screened-in porch, an empty stall in the barn, the tack room, an outhouse, etc. Unless this acclimation period is carried out completely, Barn Cat will try to find a way back "home," no matter how far away he is from campus. If you don't have anything like this, we'll be happy to lend you a pen--we want your barn cat to remain your barn cat just as much as you do!
- Determine How Many Cats You Want. You can adopt more than one! In fact, we'd prefer if you take 3-4, but we occasionally find single cats that don't play well with others and need one-cat homes. We have groups of cats that are used to living together, and they'll be happiest if they can continue living together. Tell us how many you'll be able to care for and we'll match you up with the right cats!
Adoptable Barn Cats
All barn cats have have been spayed or neutered and are up-to-date on vaccinations.
Tammy and Tabitha
Tammy and Tabitha have been looking for a good barn home since May 2008! We estimate that these sisters about 2 years old and they were found on the UGA campus. Because they formerly lived underneath a building, they would like a farm home with lots of cozy hiding places that mimic their old digs - stacks of hay bales in a barn, easy-access storage rooms and tack rooms, etc. These girls seem to be shy of people, but they're quick to learn who puts out their food!
Please contact Kelly Bettinger if you're interested in adopting either of these cats.
