What is 4-H?
4-H is a great opportunity for young people from all over to meet new people and learn new things. There are many things available in 4-H, from D.P.A., to camp, to showing livestock. So whether you live on a farm or in a big city, there are many things that you can do.
D.P.A. is a great opportunity to improve your speaking skills while you have fun. You can do a project in a variety of different subjects. A few examples are: a computers project, a beef project, a performing arts vocal, and if you don't feel comfortable talking if front of people, there is a performing arts instrumental project. But, it is good to get out of our comfort zones sometimes. It may take a lot of work to write a speech, learn it, and do posters, but in the end it definitely is worth it!
You can show livestock all over through 4-H. There are opportunities to show in local shows and then advance to bigger shows, like the Georgia National Fair in Perry GA. You can show hogs, sows, heifers, bulls, and many other animals. There is a place right here in Colquitt County to get your animal registered and prepared for showing.
There are fun trips, too. For example, Senior Conference. It is a great chance to meet a lot a people from all around Georgia, not just in your region. And there are a lot of things to learn in the workshops, too. Everyone should go to a 4-H camp. There are five different camps, Tybee Island, Wahsega, Jekyl Island, Fulton, and the famous Rock Eagle. From year to year they switch which camps Cloverleafs, Juniors, and Seniors go to.
There are so many other great opportunities in 4-H; they can't all be listed. You just need to think of everything that you like and everything that you are good at, and then go to the Extension Office and ask about all the things that are available. Whatever you choose to participate in, you can be sure that you will have fun, and you will not regret it!
