School of Environmental Design The School of Environmental Design (SED), founded in 1969, offers programs in both landscape architecture and historic preservation. In 2001, SED combined with the Institute of Ecology to create the College of Environment and Design (CED), which offers programs of studies that combine landscape architecture, historic preservation, ecology, and conservation ecology and sustainable development. This interdisciplinary approach emphasizes ecologically sound design and creative management of natural resources. SED also works with the University's School of Law, offering a joint program in historic preservation and law. SED is located in Denmark and Caldwell Halls, on the University of Georgia's historic North Campus. The beautiful Founders Memorial Garden is tucked between Denmark Hall and Lumpkin Street. The Founders Garden was installed in 1946 as a living memorial to the twelve founders of the Ladies' Garden Club of Athens, established in 1891 as the first garden club in America. The house, built in 1857, has served the university in a variety of ways over the years. The entire site, including the gardens, house, and outbuildings, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information, please visit www.sed.uga.edu
