GRADUATE PROGRAM GUIDELINES: M.S. PROGRAM CHECKLIST
It is the responsibility of the student to meet all degree requirements on time. Graduate School and department regulations deal primarily with time limitations for various steps in the sequence fore obtaining a degree. Procedures are provided in the Graduate Bulletin. If you have questions, see your Major Advisor or the Graduate Coordinator.

- ________ Report plan to remove deficiencies, if any, through courses during first year of enrollment to Graduate Coordinator.
- ________ Major Professor appointed before the beginning of the second semester of residence.
- ________* Advisory Committee (Major Professor and two faculty members)appointed before the beginning of the second semester of residence. The department requires submission of a short (1-2 paragraph) statement of your prospective research area. This will aid the GSPC in evaluating the appropriateness of the proposed committee.
- ________* Program of Study on approved form submitted to the Graduate School by the end of the second semester of residence. The department requires submission of a brief (1-2 paragraphs), more specific description of your prospective research project to accompany the proposed Program of Study. The form is signed by the members of the Advisory and the Graduate Coordinator.
- ________* Written Comprehensive Examination completed by the end of the second year in residence, not including summer; results are reported to the Graduate Coordinator.
- ________* Application for Graduation must be filed in the Graduate School (Room 552) two semesters (Friday of the first full week of classes) in advance of the semester in which you plan to graduate. The Registrar's Office will mail you a bill for the Graduation fee; be sure to use your campus address and to pay this bill in the time specified. Deadline for paying fee is 3 days before graduation.
- ________ Candidate must register for at least three semester hours of thesis (CBIO 7300).
- ________ Candidate must be enrolled in the semester when degree requirements are completed.
- ________* Thesis approved by the Major Professor (who notifies the Graduate Coordinator) and submitted to the Advisory Committee at least five weeks prior to the final oral examination.
- ________ Thesis submitted to the Advisory Committee five weeks (recommended) prior to the expected date of the final oral examination. Thesis must be typed as outlined in instruction booklet available from the Graduate School and written in the style and format acceptable to a scientific journal.
- ________ The department requires that all M.S. candidates present his/her final defense as a departmental seminar. Notify the Graduate Secretary, two weeks in advance, of the date, time, place and title of thesis. Announcements will be sent out.
- ________ Final oral examination administered by the Advisory Committee and the Major Professor.
- ________* Action of the Advisory Committee reported to Graduate School on approved form.
- ________ The original of the thesis, signed by the Major Professor, is taken to the Graduate School (Room 552) for checking of format. This must be done no later than TWO weeks prior to graduation. (Do not make official copies before this step, to save time and expense in the event there are corrections to be made.)
- ________ Binding fee paid for a minimum of 4 official copies (see below) at the Treasurer's Office.
- ________ Clean Xeroxed copies of the thesis taken to the Graduate School for the Dean's approval. (Required minimum of 4 copies: 2 for the library; 1 department; 1 Major Professor.) This must be done no later than ONE week prior to graduation. At this time, also submit the following to the Graduate School: A binding fee receipt from the Treasurer's Office; one extra copy of the title page and of the approval page; and, if copyrighting, a certified check or money order payable to University Microfilms, two copies of the abstract, and two extra copies of the title page.
- ________ All official copied of the thesis, approved by the Graduate Dean, carried to the main Library (periodicals desk in annex basement). At this time, also submit to the library: A binding fee receipt; one extra copy of the title page; and, if copyrighting, two copies of the title page, a certified check or money order payable to University Microfilms, a Microfilm/Copyright Contract (obtained from the Graduate School), and a copy of the abstract.
- ________ All of the above requirements for the M.S. degree completed and reported to the Graduate School, including submission of the final copy of the thesis, at least ONE week prior to graduation.
