Dawgs Win State Championship!

The Chess Dawgs won the Georgia Open College Team Chess Championship on Saturday, February 28th, at Emory University. After four rounds of competition the Chess Dawgs were tied with Georgia Tech, and had tied winning two games each in head to head competition with a G/45 time control. Rather than accepting victory based on having a stronger schedule, the Chess Dawgs sought to prove their dominance by challenging Georgia Tech to a five minute blitz game. After an exciting round the Chess Dawgs were victorious, crushing their rivals on all four boards.

The Chess Dawgs held a tournament to benefit Relay for Life in their fight against cancer. All proceeds from the entry fee went to Relay for Life. The prize package was donated by Barbaritos. Congratulations to Josh DuMont, winner of the Spring '08 Tournament.

The Chess Dawgs take second place in the Georgia Collegiate Team Chess Championship, making them one of the top two teams in the state!

The Georgia Chess Association (GCA) held a very successful open college team chess championship with 7 colleges bringing 10 teams to the competition at an outstanding Emory University site. The championship was a 4-round Swiss event at G/45 in 4-board match format.

This year's championship added newcomer Gainesville State to the competition while missing Clemson University from last year. Overall, this year's competition consisted of the following 10 teams: Berry College, Dekalb Tech, Emory University, Gainesville State, Georgia Tech (A, B, C teams), Mercer University (Macon), University of Georgia (A, B teams). In the weeks leading up to this championship several other schools indicated an interest in participating but were unable to follow through for various reasons. Overall, the event continues to grow each year.

The Chess Dawgs Host their own tournament every semester. The Spring '07 Chess Tournament was held in the Tate Gallery on November 4th. Congratulations goes out to Richard Francisco, the Chess Dawgs reigning King, and runner-up Travis Clements. The winner and runner-up each received a Chess Dawgs T-shirt. Emory sponsors the 2007 Georgia Open Collegiate Team Chess Championship. The Chess Dawgs competed against Georgia Tech, Clemson, Berry, Mercer, and Dekalb tech. Both of our teams tied for second with Clemson, with the tie being broken by how well the team did in other rounds. Our A-team won third place and a trophy! Special thanks to everyone who competed.
