Program Overview

The University of Georgia (UGA), Columbus State University (CSU) and Georgia Southern University (GSU) have been awarded Department of Education (DOE) funding to establish courses leading to a system-wide certificate in African Studies (CAS). This certificate program will be implemented under the auspices of the University System of Georgia’s Africa Council. The main program objectives are facilitation of quality course offerings including a rich African content, and enhanced faculty opportunities to conduct collaborative research in and about Africa. The Certificate is recommended to students wishing to gain International perspectives in preparation for professions in the global marketplace

Student Benefit

The Certificate in African Studies offers students valuable knowledge about Africa and various aspects of life on the continent. Students have opportunities to register for online courses not offered at their home institution. The program’s multidisciplinary nature enhances the students’ competitive advantage in careers in national and international marketplaces. Upon successful completion of the curriculum, students receive a credential demonstrating their specialization in the geographic area of Africa, in addition to their disciplinary major and minor.
