| EVERYDAY | At Alps Elementary School, we help out anytime during the week from 8 am until 2 pm through the homework helper program there. Volunteers have done everything in the past from reading to a student on a weekly basis to reading out words for spelling bees and even helping teachers out with school assemblies. First-time volunteers can go to the school office and sign-up to get a name tag, then look at the chart outside the office to see which teachers need help at what time - there's always something you can do to help out and the school really appreciates it. To get to Alps Elementary School, take Baxter Street off of Lumpkin and take it past Milledge Ave. Alps Elementary will be on your left before Baxter dead ends into Alps Road. Contact Kunal Mitra for further details. | ||
| MONDAYS | We go to Grandview Nursing Home every Monday evening from 7:30 to 8:30 to play BINGO with some of the residents. We usually have a small but eager crowd who love the company even more than playing the game itself! Volunteers meet at the Brumby Circle at 7:15 to carpool. To get to Grandview Nursing Home take Milledge Ave. towards Broad St. Take it until it ends at Prince Ave. Turn left on Prince, then take the next right at Chase St. Take Chase St. almost to the end and turn left at Winston Dr. The nursing home is second building on the left. Contact Diane Simpson for further details. | ||
| TUESDAYS | No projects scheduled. | ||
| WEDNESDAYS | At Oasis, we teach and tutor young children from a primarily Spanish-speaking neighborhood, helping with homework and studies in the afternoon from 3:30 until 5:00 or however long volunteers can spend time there. You don't have to know how to speak Spanish to volunteer though! Contact Jennifer Edwards at for further details. | ||
| THURSDAYS | At the Pauldo Street Boys and Girls Club, we help the kids with their homework and also teach a nutrition and exercise program called HEALTHY (Health and Exercise Always Lead To Happier Youth). Through the program, we teach kids how to make healthy afterschool snacks and show them games or play new and different kinds of sports, giving them healthy eating options and new ways to exercise. We help with homework and run the HEALTHY program from about 3 pm to 5 pm every Thursday. To get to the Pauldo Boys and Girls Club, take Broad Street west until it intersects Alps/Hawthorne. Take a right onto Hawthorne, and continue down until Pauldo Street appears on the left. Take the left onto Pauldo, and stay right on the road and you will see a blue and white building with a Boys and Girls Club sign on it. |
