Anne Charlotte Merrell Wetterwik joined the Center for International Trade and Security as an Export Control Research Associate in Spring of 2005. Prior to her position at CITS-UGA, Ms Merrell Wetterwik served as a desk officer at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. In that capacity she was responsible for international negotiations and domestic decision making in the area of export control. Ms Merrell Wetterwik specializes in questions related to trade and security policy of the European Union and the multilateral export control regimes in particular the Australia Group and the Wassenaar Arrangement.
Ms Merrell Wetterwik is a graduate of the Uppsala University, Sweden, from which she holds a BA in political science and is close to finalizing her M.A. Ms Merrell Wetterwik holds a degree in Russian (Outstanding) from the Moscow State University (MGU) and a degree in English (Grade A) from the University of Cambridge.
Ms Merrell Wetterwik has been featured on several occasions as speaker at international conferences and was the moderator for the first Wassenaar Arrangement outreach seminar 2004. She also initiated and led a major cooperation project between the Swedish Government and Transparency International, co-authoring a report on corruption in the official arms trade during the Swedish Presidency of the European Union 2001. She has in her line of work traveled extensively, conducting research and proactive export control outreach as well as interacting with international colleagues both in government and academia in the field of export control.
Before working with export control issues for the Swedish MFA, Ms Merrell Wetterwik was stationed at the Swedish delegation to NATO and WEU, Brussels, Belgium. She has also lived and worked in the UK and the Russian Federation.
