Field Trip to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center is located in Glynco, GA and Artesia, NM. Every year we hope to plan a trip to FLETC located in Glynco, GA. It is just about 5 hours south of Athens. About 10 to 15 students are able to go on this trip. This is a very educational and enjoyable trip for anyone intersted in in a future career in a federal law enforcement agency. FLETC handles training for every federal law enforcement agency except for the CIA and the FBI.

During the trip to FLETC, students are able to meet with the Division Supervisors from the Legal Division, Behavioral Science Division, and the Forensics and Investigative Technologies Division. Students also get to tour the Explosive and Arson Range and the Driver Course. During the day, students even get to witness role-playing scenarios by students training at the center. If the students on the trip express any interest in the internship program FLETC provides, then they are able to speak with the internship coordinator about tips and how-to go about applying for the internship.

The FLETC trip is a fun way to learn whether or not a student would enjoy pursuing a federal law enforcement career. Students really enjoy this trip because they see not only the law enforcement side, but they can get a peek at the criminal law side and see all the aspects of FLETC.

If you are interested in this trip, keep your eye on the list serve for updates about when the trip is going to take place during the fall or spring semester. If you would like more information on FLETC, feel free to visit the Official FLETC Website.

Trip to the Reidsville Maximum Security Correctional Facility
The trip to the Reidsville Maximum Security Correctional Facility is usually combined with the trip to FLETC because it is located in south Georgia about an hour away from FLETC. On the tour of this facility, students are able to spend time in the electric chair museum. In this museum, students are able to sit in the last used electric chair of Georgia and learn about some of the more important death penalty cases from the past. Students can see where the prisoners on death row lived their last days and view the room in which the prisoners were prepared for their funerals after being put to death.

Students are shown both the minimum security wings and the maximum security wings. The mental health wing is separate from the other wings and students are allowed to walk through this wing and learn how prisoners get to this wing. The infirmary and the courtroom are also shown during the tour. The Correction Officers are more than willing to answer any questions students may have along with the great tour guides the CJ Society has been provided in the past.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Headquarters and Crime Lab
The GBI Headquarters and Crime Lab are located in Decatur, GA. During this trip, students get a chance to tour all the headquarters. They get to speak with agents and workers within the lab and morgue. During the last trip, students viewed 3 autopsies. Students that were able to handle it, actually got to go inside and view an autopsy just inches away! Students get to see the morgue, view where bodies are taken in, and see how evidence is collected and stored. This has been a long time favorite trip for many CJ students.

Alumni Panels
The Alumni Panel first began in 1995. It is held annually on the Friday before the UGA Homecoming Game and brings together graduates from the UGA Criminal Justice Studies Program to speak to current undergraduate students about careers and employment opportunities. In the past, there have been almost 100 alumni representing many aspects of local, state, and federal law enforcement along with law/court related positions. This is the perfect opportunity for students to perhaps make connections and learn more about how to go about applying for future jobs and learning who is or isn't able to apply. The Criminal Justice Program could not thrive as it does today if it were not for these gracious alumni who come back for the panels year after year!

The Federal Law Enforcement Employment Seminar with Bill Curley
Bill Curley is a retired SAC of the Louisville Office of the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms). Mr. Curley explains the extensive application process that comes along with applying for federal law enforcement positions. Students take part in mock-interviews and Mr. Curley prepares students for questions they may face throughout the application process. This oppoturntiy has been offered every spring semester for the last few years. Students have offered up high praises about this experience.

Guest Speakers
In the past few years, the CJ Society has sponsored various guest speakers that cover all aspects of the Criminal Justice System spectrum. These have included a polygraph lecture from a GBI agent, a book signing and disucssion from the author of "The Hunt for Eric Rudolph"; Henry Schuster, and domestic violence specialists.
