History of the Criminal Justice Society
The Criminal Justice Society is an academic student organization first established in 1982. Criminal Justice Society is a registered, UGA student organization and is affiliated with the Criminal Justice Studies Program at the University. The Society offers support and professional development for those students planning on careers in criminal justice and related fields. Program Director and political science faculty member Susette Talarico is the advisor for the group. Criminal Justice Society is officially recognized by UGA’s Department of Student Activities. The Society receives some funding from the College of Arts and Sciences for guest lectures, field trips, and costs associated with such functions.
The Society is working with the family of a former CJ major here at UGA, the late William Christopher Bush III. Will’s family and the UGA Foundation have established a permanent fund in Will’s memory that will benefit the CJ Society. Will was a criminal justice major who died of cancer on August 7, 2001. Will wanted memorial funds to go to the Society and specifically to be used for student professional development.
