Steps to Being a Georgia Clean Marina Participant
The following
seven steps outline the way a typical Georgia marina may participate
in the CMP.
1. Learn about the Clean Marina Program
Contact the Georgia Clean Marina Program Manager (CMPM) , {Mr. Paul
Christian; University of Georgia Marine Extension, 715 Bay Street, Brunswick,
GA 31520; 912-264-7268; pchristi@arches.uga.edu} to obtain a copy of
"Best Environmental Practices for Georgia Marinas", a Pledge
Form, Certification Assessment Form, and other program information.
2. Take
the Clean Marina Business Pledge
By signing the pledge, the marina commits to "do their part to
keep Georgia's waterways free of harmful chemicals, excess nutrients,
and debris." The Clean Marina Program Manager will keep a photocopy
of the signed pledge on file and the original can be displayed in a
public area so that customers will be aware of the commitment the business
has made to clean water. The Program Manager will prepare a news release
acknowledging the marine business's participation in the Georgia Clean
Marina Program after they have successfully completed the assessment
requirements. In addition, this information will be placed in other
appropriate public displays and publications. The pledge will expire
one year from the date it is signed. If the marina is unable to achieve
the goal in one year, they may renew the pledge by contacting the CMPM.
3. Conduct
an assessment of the property
To get an official inspection all the marina has to do is make an appointment
with the Clean Marina Program Manager (Paul Christian 912-264-7268)
to work with the business to assess them using the Clean Marina Assessment
Form and "Best Environmental Practices for Georgia Marinas".
(Copies attached) It is suggested that the marina do a self- test first
before the initial survey is preformed.
4. Call
upon the CMPM to answer any questions
Marinas need not be discouraged if they initially have difficulty meeting
the minimum scores. The Clean Marina Program Manager will assist any
marina in becoming a Clean Marina. If specific questions cannot be answered
directly by the CMPM, you will be put in touch with someone that can
assist you or possibly one of the marina operators who have been previously
helped to develop the Georgia Clean Marina Program.
5. Schedule
a follow-up assessment visit (for those who do not initially meet (minimum
scores).
Once a marina feels they have satisfied the certification standards
described on the Clean Marina Assessment Form, and have made changes
according to the suggestions made by the CMPM and/or Best Environmental
Practices for Georgia Marinas, all the marine business has to do is
call the Clean Marina Program Manager to schedule a follow-up survey.
This must be done within sixty (60) days of the initial inspection.
6. Enjoy
the rewards!
As a Georgia Clean Marian, you will be authorized to use the Georgia
Clean Marina logo on their letterhead and in their advertising. They
will receive a certificate, a burgee to fly at their marine business
and be listed on the Georgia Clean Marina web site. The facility will
also be included in the Georgia Clean Marina Newsletter and other publications
and public displays. A news release will be sent recognizing the business's
demonstrated commitment to environmental stewardship.
7. Maintain
Clean Marina Status
Annually, the CMPM will confirm that previous participants meet the
requirements to continue receiving Clean Marina Certification Award
Standards by performing another inspection of the facility one year
from the successful completion date of the previous survey.
