Alternative Spring Break - "The Week that Lasts a Lifetime!"

The mission of the Alternative Spring Break program is to engage University of Georgia students in an affordable weeklong substance free experiential service learning project that encourages an understanding of pressing social issues in a significant way.
ASB began at UGA in 1994 with a group of students interested in spending the week of Spring Break engaged in community service as opposed to the more traditional past-times of college spring break. Since the beginning of the program, over 1,500 UGA students have participated in Alternative Spring Break and traveled across the Southeast to participate in meaningful service projects that benefit the communities in which they work.

The Alternative Spring Break program places teams of college school students in communities to engage in community service and experiential learning during their spring break. Students perform short term projects for community agencies and learn about issues such as poverty, racism, homelessness, healthcare, and the environment. Being completely immersed into diverse environments enables participants to experience, discuss, and understand social concerns in an impactful way.

UGA’s Alternative Spring Break program is one of hundreds that take place across the nation in both colleges and high schools. These programs are linked through the national organization Break Away. In the spring of 2007, according to BreakAway the Alternative Break Connection, an estimated 36,000 students across the nation will participate in an alternative break experience.
