A paper in the Jan/Feb 2007 issue of Educational Researcher, authored by five UGA qualitative research faculty, briefly reviews positions outlined by qualitative researchers about quality in qualitative inquiry, showing how these are implicated in the acquisition, conceptualization and use of qualitative evidence. It concludes by identifying issues in and challenges to setting standards of evidence for qualitative researchers in education. The co-authors are Melissa Freeman, Kathleen deMarrais, Judith Preissle, Kathryn Roulston, and Elizabeth A. St. Pierre.

Derrick Alridge, associate professor in the department of lifelong education, administration, and policy, argues that discrete, heroic, one-dimensional and neatly packaged master narratives in most American history textbooks on Martin Luther King, Jr., present prescribed, oversimplified and uncontroversial narratives that obscure important elements in MLK's life and thought in the Jan. 16, 2007 lead article of the TC Record, a journal of educational research, analysis and commentary published by Teachers College, Columbia University. Such narratives, he contends, deny students critical lenses through which to examine, analyze and interpret social issues today. The article concludes with suggestions about how teachers might begin to address the current problem of master narratives and offer alternative approaches to presenting U.S. history.

Wraga argues, have implications beyond the specific issue of racial segregation in the schools. Wraga, a professor in the education administration and policy program, is author of the lead article in the February 2006 Phi Delta Kappan.
