Linda Campbell has been selected to receive the 2009 Georgia State University Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award for outstanding professional achievements as an educator and researcher.
Counseling professor Linda Campbell has been selected to receive the 2009 Georgia State University Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award for outstanding professional achievements as an educator and researcher.
Campbell, a professor in the department of counseling and human development services, directs the UGA Center for Counseling and Personal Evaluation and teaches graduate courses in counseling psychology.
She is a licensed psychologist and former president of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Division of Psychotherapy, and Division of State and Provincial Psychological Association Affairs. She is also president of the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Psychologists, the unit which grants licenses to practice psychology in Georgia. She is a member and past chair of the APA Board of Educational Affairs which supports training and education in psychology at the national level.
Campbell received the prestigious APA State Leadership Award for 2006, which is given to only one person each year across all state psychological associations with membership of 50,000 or more. She also received the Distinguished Psychologist Award (2000) from the APA’s Division of Psychotherapy, and the Distinguished Psychologist Award (2008) from the APA Division of State and Provincial Psychological Associations. She was selected in 2009 for Fellow status in the APA Division of Counseling Psychology. She is a three-time winner of the GPA President’s Award (2005, 2000 and 1999) recognizing contributions to the Georgia Psychological Association.
“This extraordinary recognition from Georgia State University is most humbling and I am honored to be an alumna of this great institution,” Campbell said. “My parents lived within very modest financial means. Their singular dream for me was an education that would open doors for me that were not always open to many children in my community. Georgia State University gave them and me the fulfillment of that dream. As my teaching career progresses, I hope to give to others a small measure of what Georgia State University has given to me.”
Campbell earned her doctorate at Georgia State before joining the UGA faculty in 1988. She has co-authored several books and written several book chapters and journal articles. She will be recognized for her latest honor at Georgia State University’s graduation ceremony May 9 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
