Sheila Kahrs, principal of Haymon-Morris Middle School in Winder, has been named the Georgia Middle School Principal of the Year for 2009.

Kahrs, a graduate of the College of Education, will compete for the National Middle School Principal Award in October. She will be honored in Washington, D.C., at a celebration hosted by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and MetLife, sponsors of the Principal of the Year recognition program.

“Being selected as the Georgia Middle School Principal of the Year has been a thrilling experience,” said Kahrs. “The most satisfying part of this is that the nomination came from my faculty. It is such a vote of confidence in what we are about at Haymon-Morris Middle School. Our efforts are focused on student success and the needs of the middle school young adolescent.”

Kahrs has been in school administration in Barrow County for the last 11 years of a 20-year career in education. She earned her Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction in 1992.
