Katie Koerten is one of two 2009 UGA graduates selected to receive a Georgia Power New Teacher Assistance Grant.
Two mathematics education graduates were recently selected to receive Georgia Power New Teacher Assistance Grants.
Kathryn Koerten, who received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from UGA in May 2009, now teaches mathematics at Druid Hills High School in Atlanta.
Mike Walliser, who received his master’s in mathematics education from UGA in August 2009, now teaches mathematics at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens.
Recipients of the grants are nominated by College of Education faculty and are selected by a committee composed of statewide educators and Georgia Power staff.
The Georgia Power grants program, now in its sixth year, awards $1,000 to two graduates of each of Georgia’s 17 public four-year colleges and universities with a state-approved teacher education program. The funds enable the teachers to purchase classroom supplies beyond those provided by the schools.
Candidates for the grants must be first-year teachers who were in the top 25 percent of their class academically and demonstrate an aptitude for teaching.
