The native of Newburgh, N.Y., an Iraq war veteran and a learning specialist at George P. Butler Comprehensive High School in Augusta, is challenging incumbent Ben Harbin. Dec 5, 2007, 15:15:00 Graduate student and alumna, Meredith Holland Jones, died Nov. 30, 2007, after battling cancer. Jones was named the Rockdale County Teacher of the Year for 2005-2006. College of Education graduate student Brandon Register has received a $5,000 grant from the Association for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC) to expand his work in providing death notification training to rural Georgia law enforcement officers.

Graduate students in recreation and leisure studies worked at a youth camp in Russia this summer in a UGA Study Abroad program directed by Gwynn Powell, an associate professor in the department of counseling and human development services. A local Russian newspaper, Mari El Pravda did a story on the visit on July 12, 2007.
