Edward Delgado-Romero is the training director and head of the counseling psychology doctoral program.
Edward Delgado-Romero, associate professor in counseling and human development services, will be one of the featured speakers at the 26th Annual Winter Roundtable on Cultural Psychology and Education, sponsored by the Counseling Psychology Program and the Center for Educational Outreach and Innovation at Teachers College, Columbia University, February 20-21.
The Winter Roundtable is the longest running continuing professional education program in the United States devoted solely to cultural issues in psychology and education. The theme of the 2009 Roundtable conference, “Incorporating Multicultural Models in Psychology and Education,” emphasizes education and training across a variety of settings, including K-12 schools, undergraduate curricula, graduate and internship programs in mental health services, as well as organizational settings.
Delgado-Romero’s presentation is entitled, “Latinos and Education: The Case of Psychology,” which looks at psychological education from community colleges through doctoral programs focusing on Latinos. His research indicates that although psychology is the most popular major for Latino undergraduates and the area in which Latinos receive the most doctoral degrees - when viewed in the context of the rapidly growing Latino population - this growth is simply not enough. That is, psychology is not poised to address the issues of our nation where Latinos are projected to be 25-30% of the country’s population by 2060.
